Written from my heart, not a guidebook.
Before We Talk About India, Let’s Talk About Courage
Every journey begins long before the flight is booked. It begins with a question.
Sometimes it’s about the weather. Sometimes it’s about the visa. But for many women, there’s another question that quietly sits in the background.
“Will I feel safe?”
It doesn’t matter whether you’re travelling alone, with your partner, with your mother, your daughter, or your closest friends. It’s a question many women carry.
Not because they want to fear the world. But because they’ve learned to prepare for it.
As the founder of Unpacked India, I don’t see this question as negativity. I see it as honesty. And honesty deserves thoughtful answers.

India Is Not One Story
One of the biggest misconceptions about India is that it can be described in a single sentence. It can’t.
India isn’t one city. One culture. One language. Or one way of life. It’s a country of extraordinary contrasts.
The rhythm of Mumbai is different from the quiet villages of Sikkim. The energy of Delhi is different from the calm of Coorg. The evenings in Varanasi feel nothing like the beaches of the Andaman Islands.
Every destination has its own personality. That’s why planning matters — not because India should be feared, but because every meaningful journey deserves thoughtful preparation.
Safety Isn’t Just About a Destination
It’s about how the journey is designed.
At Unpacked India, we don’t believe safety is a checklist. It’s a feeling.
It’s knowing your airport transfer is waiting. It’s staying in accommodations we’ve carefully chosen. It’s having trusted local partners who know the destination.
It’s not rushing from one city to another after dark just to fit more into the itinerary. It’s having someone you can call when plans change. It’s creating space to enjoy a place without feeling anxious about what’s next.
For us, thoughtful planning is one of the greatest forms of hospitality.
Travel With Awareness, Not Fear
No destination in the world comes with guarantees. Whether you’re travelling in India, Italy, Japan, or your own hometown, awareness is one of the best travel companions you can carry.
Stay curious. Trust your instincts. Respect local customs. Choose trusted local experts. And never hesitate to ask questions.
The goal isn’t to travel fearfully. It’s to travel confidently.
As One Woman to Another
If you’re reading this from another corner of the world, wondering whether India is a place you should visit, I’d like to speak to you — not as the founder of Unpacked India, but simply as an Indian woman.
I know the questions that may be running through your mind.
Will I feel comfortable? Will I feel welcomed? Will I be able to enjoy this journey without constantly looking over my shoulder?
These are not difficult questions. They’re honest ones. And I believe they deserve honest answers.
As women, we often plan a journey a little differently. We don’t just look at the beauty of a destination — we think about how it might make us feel. Whether we’ll feel at ease. Whether we’ll be treated with kindness. Whether we’ll return home with stories we can’t wait to tell.
I’ve travelled across India for many years. Through busy cities and quiet villages. Across mountains, deserts, forests and coastlines.
And when I look back on those journeys, I realise something. The landscapes are unforgettable — but they are not what stayed with me the most. It was always the people.
I still remember the woman who wouldn’t let me leave her home without sharing a meal. Not because I was her guest, but because, in her eyes, no one should leave hungry.
I remember an elderly grandmother who smiled at me from across a village courtyard. We didn’t speak the same language, yet somehow, in that brief moment, we understood each other perfectly.

I remember young women proudly introducing visitors to their hometowns. Artists who gently placed a paintbrush in my hand and said, “Now it’s your turn.” Home cooks who welcomed strangers into their kitchens as though they were welcoming old friends. Naturalists who spoke about the forests they loved with the same affection someone speaks about family.
So if you choose to visit, come with curiosity. Come with respect. Come with an open heart.
Not because every journey will be perfect — no journey ever is. But because you may discover something that no guidebook can promise.
You may leave with more than beautiful photographs. You may leave remembering the conversations that lasted over a cup of chai. The woman who taught you a family recipe without measuring a single ingredient. The artisan who proudly showed you a craft she learned from her mother. The guide who didn’t just tell you about a place, but helped you understand why it mattered.
Those are the moments that stay. Those are the moments that quietly change the way we see a country. And they are the moments I hope every traveller finds through Unpacked India.
Because before I invite you to discover India… I want you to know the India that I know. The one that welcomed me. The one that continues to inspire me. And the one that, I hope, will welcome you with the same warmth.
“Please don’t let fear introduce you to my country before its people do.”
